    Learning goals

    • Understand Blast.
    • Understand Corrosive.
    • Understand Gas.
    • Understand Magnetic.
    • Understand Radiation.
    • Understand Viral.
    • Understand why combined elements are not automatically better than primary elements.

    Explanation

Combined elemental damage types are created by combining two primary elements: Blast is Heat plus Cold, Corrosive is Electricity plus Toxin, Gas is Heat plus Toxin, Magnetic is Cold plus Electricity, Radiation is Heat plus Electricity, and Viral is Cold plus Toxin. Combined elements consume the primary elements used to make them unless another source creates a separate element.

    What should I do?

Choose combined elements by purpose: Corrosive for armor reduction, Viral for health damage amplification through status, Magnetic for shields, Gas for area/cloud behavior, Radiation for confusion or faction contexts, and Blast for accuracy reduction or Blast-specific interaction.

    How to avoid wasting time

Do not assume Viral is always correct, Corrosive is always outdated, or Magnetic is always useless. The best element depends on the target, weapon, status application, and current mechanics.

    Common mistakes

Avoid these damage category mistakes before spending Forma, Catalysts, Rivens, or expensive mod upgrades.

    • Memorizing one best element for every mission.
    • Forgetting combined element recipes.
    • Accidentally creating the wrong combined element.
    • Ignoring enemy shields, armor, or health type.
    • Using Gas without grouping or area logic.
    • Using Viral on a weapon that cannot apply status reliably.
    • Using Corrosive when armor is already fully stripped by another source.

    Practical example

A high-status weapon may apply Viral frequently and support health damage. Another weapon may struggle against armor and benefit from Corrosive or armor strip support. A shield-heavy enemy context may reward Magnetic more than a generic build would.

    Key Takeaways

    • Combined elements are tools. Choose the tool for the target, not for the name.

    Practical task

Element recipes are core modding literacy.

    1. In a test config, create Blast with Heat + Cold.
    2. Create Corrosive with Electricity + Toxin.
    3. Create Gas with Heat + Toxin.
    4. Create Magnetic with Cold + Electricity.
    5. Create Radiation with Heat + Electricity.
    6. Create Viral with Cold + Toxin.
    7. Write one use case for each.

You can create and explain all six combined elements.
